Chris Baker the Artist

Welcome

After a lifetime of creating images with a camera I have moved to the easel to create new pictures with pastel, charcoal and paint.

I studied Graphic design at Hornsey College of Art in the late sixties but found my creative voice through photography and spent the last twenty years specialising in actors headshots icluding the likes of Michael Sheen, Rob Brydon, Sylvia Syms, Geri Halliwell, Rufus Sewell, Imelda Staunton, Julia Sawahla, Stephen Graham and Joanna Page to name but a few.

Since picking up the paintbrush again I have exhibited regularly with Barnet Guild of Artists, Hertford and St Albans Art Societies. I have also exhibited with Courtyard Arts and even had a painting hung at the Royal Academy when I reached the final 12 in BBC's One Show Art competition.

I had my first "One man Show" at The Coffee Seeker Cafe in Finchley in 2016 and another in November 2018!

    Then came the Pandemic!!

If you want to see new work as it appears, the best place to look is Instagram  - "Chris Baker The Artist"

NB I am, regrettably no longer on Twitter or Facebook!

Framing

Chris Baker the Artist

To be seen to best advantage, I believe a painting should have a frame designed specifically for its character, colour and intended location! I am able to mount and/or frame work to suit your requirements but am happy for clients to source their own framer if preferred.

Above is an example of the type of hand painted, solid wood, bespoke frame I can provide. Prices from around £50.00

Commissions

Chris Baker the Artist

I welcome commissions and will give a candid assessment not only of cost but also my ability to fulfil your requirements. I am happy to work from live subjects and/or photographs and again will advise honestly as to the best approach. I reserve the right to refuse a commission if I'm unhappy with the concept.

About Me

Chris Baker the Artist

I began to rediscover my artistic aspirations a deade or so ago now and have been endeavouring ever since to build on my understanding of light, composition and figures to produce a wide diversity of work including landscape, life studies and occasionally when a volunteer can be found, portraits!

My affection for black and white images finds expression through charcoal and my fondness for drawing led me to pastel for a time but the majority of my work is now in oils. I do all my own framing making each work totally unique.

Like countless artists before me I also love the female figure and find it an endless inspiration. some time ago, I discovered a fascination with ballet and as a "Friend" of English National Ballet have been able to observe and sketch dancers at close quarters; again not exactly original but, to me, a subject of inexhaustible possibilities.

I have also discovered a fondness for landscape, rural and urban and am glad to say, these have proved popular with buyers of my work.

I live and work mostly in Barnet Hertfordshire.
